The village of Altarnun was first mentioned in the doomsday book as Penpont but takes it's name from the 6th century church of st Nonna. The present church dates from the 15th century and is known as the Cathedral of the Moor.

The River Inney, one of the chief tributaries of the Tamar River runs through the village and is crossed by a fine 15th century bridge. This stretch of the river is known as Penpont Water and is considered one of the prettiest in Cornwall.

The rectory, built in 1842, is featured in the novel "Jamaica Inn" by Daphne Du Maurier , who was said to have been a visitor to the house. Opposite the village green, a long white building was originally the village alms houses. If you wish to visit Jamaica Inn itself for a pint or even a meal, and to learn more about the local association with Daphne Du Maurier, it's just a short 10 min drive away.

On the subject of local pubs and places to eat, Jaspers Camping is close to the Kings Head in Altarnun itself (which servers great food and a fine selection of beers and ciders) and within easy walking distance. A little further away is the Rising Sun, a fantastically charactered and award winning 16th Century moorland Inn and restaurant.
